Revit Modeling: Ramps & Railings

This article covers the modeling of ramps and railings in Revit.

Ramp

In the architecture Tab, click Revit ramp button.png (Ramp) to create a new ramp.

When you create a ramp, specify the Base Level and Top Level, which determine from where to where the stairs will run. For both the base and top you can specify an additional offset, if required. These values are set in the Properties Palette.


Ramp Type properties

Before you start drawing your ramp, make sure you selected or created an appropriate Type. The Type Properties determine the most important properties of the ramp:

Thickness
thickness of the Ramp construction
Maximum Incline Length
Maximum length of the inclined parts of your ramp. In between there will be horizontal landings.
Ramp Max Slope
maximum grade of the ramp expressed in 1/x: One meter elevation in every x meters of ramp (in plan projection)


Railing

Railings are usually placed automatically for stairs and ramp, but can also be placed manually. In the architecture Tab, click the arrow under Revit railing fold-out.png (Railings) to open the fold-out. Revit offers two options to create railings:

Create a railing by drawing lines in plan view.

Create a railing by selecting a ramp or stair.


Railing Type Properties

Rail Structure
configuration of the horizontal elements of the railing (excluding the top rail!). You can add or remove rails, or change the profile.
Baluster Placement
configure the vertical elements of the railing. Spacing, profile, corner posts, etc.
Top Rail Height
height of the top railing
Top Rail Type
profile of the top railing
