Set New Project

To open a new Vasari project, Click Vasari logo 2.jpg New » Project.

It is important to check if Vasari is set on the correct Metric Units, like millimeters and square meters.

Project Units

To find the Unit settings go to the Manage tab and Click Project Units Vasari project units.jpg.

Project Units - Metric

When you don’t see millimeters (mm) and square meters (m2) change the settings of the project template.

Change project template file

To change the default settings Click Vasari logo 2.jpg Options > File Locations. Click on the Vasari Template under path and browse for the template file. Choose the US Metric template and open the Vasari-default.rte file. Now the project templates will be set on Metric Units.

Or you can Press CTRL+N to create a new project file. And choose a metric project file, see figure.

Location

Set location

When you create a project it is possible to specify the geographic location using the street address or the latitude and longitude. This is useful for generating location-specific shadows for views that use them, such as solar studies and walkthroughs. The location provides a basis for weather information, which is used during conceptual energy analysis.

To specify the project location, Click Analysis tab > Project Location panel > Location. When your computer is connected to the Internet, and you have signed in to Autodesk online services, this dialog displays an interactive map through the Google Maps mapping service. To sign in see Autodesk Account.

Until you specify a different project location, the location is set to the longitude and latitude of the major city specified by Vasari for your locale.

For the Project Address, enter the street address, city and country. Enter: Lange Voorhout 74, Den Haag, Nederland.

Click Import Site Image to import the Google map image of your location into your project file.

You can also access this dialog from the Sun Settings dialog , the Energy Settings dialog or in the drawing area, underneath the ViewCube, click the current location > Set Location.

Import site image

Use the following tools to adjust the map as needed:

  • Pan. When you place the cursor over the map, the cursor changes to a hand, and you can drag the map to pan the view. For Zoom, Click + (Zoom in) or - (Zoom out), or drag the zoom slider to adjust the zoom level.
  • Map. Shows street map.
  • Satellite. Shows satellite imagery.
  • Terrain. Default view. Shows street map superimposed on topographical map.

Family template

A family is a group of elements with a common set of properties, called parameters, and a related graphical representation. Different elements belonging to a family may have different values for some or all of their parameters, but the set of parameters (their names and meanings) is the same. These variations within the family are called family types or types. For example, the Mass category includes families and family types that you can use to create different types of masses.

Although these families serve different purposes and are composed of different materials, they have a related use. Each type in the family has a related graphical representation and an identical set of parameters, called the family type parameters. When you create an element in a project with a specific family and family type, you create an instance of the element. Each element instance has a set of properties, in which you can change some element parameters independent of the family type parameters. These changes apply only to the instance of the element, the single element in the project. If you make any changes to the family type parameters, the changes apply to all element instances that you created with that type.

Create Conceptual Mass Family template

Load Mass family into project

To open a new Vasari Family template, Click Vasari logo 2.jpg New > Family.

It is important to check if Vasari is set on the correct Metric Units, like millimeters and square meters.

In the pop-up window go to Conceptual Mass and choose the file Mass.rft. Now your mass family template is loaded.

Rhino to Vasari (solids)

Rhino export

  1. Make sure you only draw solids geometry in rhino, select all the geometry you want to export.
  2. Go to menu export selected. Select export as ACIS (.sat), in the pop up menu that follows select Default.

Rhino export sat.jpg

Tip: Make sure you import the geometric data needed for the Vasari analysis.

Vasari import

Import model into Vasari
Import options
  1. Click > Import > Import CAD.
  2. In the Import CAD Formats dialog, navigate to the folder that contains the file to import.
  3. Select the import file.
  4. Specify the import options. See Import Options for CAD Formats and Vasari Models. If you choose the option (Origin - Origin) the location of your model will have the same origin as in Rhino. Don't forget to check the scaling in the model.
  5. Click Open. Now you will load the solid geometry from Rhino into Vasari.
  6. If you choose to manually place the imported data, it displays in the drawing area and moves with the cursor. Click to place the imported data.

You may need to zoom in to see the imported data. See Zooming Project Views.

N.B. If the import scale isn’t right try looking at the Units used in your Rhino model. You can change the line color and the render materials with a visibility/graphics override. Go to the view tab and then click visibility/graphics. Go to imported categories, object styles, change line color or render material. Graphics >> Shading, use Render appearance for shading. You can also set the transparency of the material.

Loading the Current Family into a Project

Load family into project

After working in the Family Editor to create or modify a family, you can load the family into one or more open projects. Note: The projects into which you want to load the family must be open.

  • In the Family Editor, click Model tab > Family Editor panel > (Load into Project). Vasari load famiily.jpg
  • If only one project is currently open, the family is loaded into that project, and the project displays in the drawing area.
  • If multiple projects are open, the Load into Projects dialog displays. Select the open projects to receive the family, and click OK.

Note: If you don't use the Mass family template to import your Rhino models not all the Vasari analysis will work, like for example the Solar Radiation Analysis.
