Installation process

For this list of tutorials, Honeybee v.1.3.0 is going to be used, which is part of the Ladybug Tools v.1.3.0. In order to be able to effectively run the Honeybee simulations, you should have the following software installed in your computer.

Rhino & Grasshopper

Rhino & Grasshopper version 6 or 7

Students from TU Delft can install Grasshopper and Rhino by using the installation guide provided by @Hok Student ICT Support: @Hok Installation Guides.


Ladybug Tools

As mentioned before, Ladybug Tools v.1.3.0 is going to be used. In case you already have another version of Ladybug Tools (Ladybug + Honeybee) already installed, see how you can update or remove it in:


Installing Ladybug Tools v.1.3.0

Download the package from: Ladybug Tools v.1.3.0


Installer v.1.3.0

1.Unzip the ladybug-tools-1-3-0 file you downloaded.

(Right-click to the file name → Extract to ladybug-tools-1-3-0)

2. Inside the ladybug-tools-1-3-0 folder, find the installer.gh file and open it in Grasshopper.

3.Double-click to both Boolean Toggles and set them to True.

4. Restart Rhino & Grasshopper.


Installing Radiance & Open Studio

You should have installed the versions of Radiance and OpenStudio which are compatible to the version of Ladybug tools that you are using each time. You can find out about the compatibility of the versions in the Compatibility Matrix.

For Ladybug tools v. 1.3.0 you should have installed Radiance 5.4a and Open Studio 3.2.0.


Check for older versions of Radiance & Open Studio

Important to note: Before installing them you should make sure that you have removed any older versions of Radiance and Open Studio that may exist in your computer. You can check it by using the HB Check versions component in Grasshopper and connecting a Params » Input » Panel to each output.

In case you see that other older versions of Radiance (e.g. Radiance 5.3.0) and/or Openstudio are already installed, go to Start Menu » Settings » Applications, find them, press ‘uninstall’ and follow the steps that will appear on your screen.

Afterwards, follow the next steps in order to install the new versions.

Installing Radiance 5.4a


Add Radiance to the system path

1. Download Radiance from here.

Scroll till the bottom of the page and download in the same folder the following files:

-Radiance_947ea88a_Windows.exe

-Radiance_947ea88a_Windows.zip

-Radiance_Auxiliary_947ea88a.zip

2. Unzip the .zip files.

3. Double click on the .exe file in order to run the installation.

Important to note: When installing, check the “Add Radiance to the system PATH for all users” in the options and make sure that the destination of the installation is C:\Radiance.


Installing Open Studio 3.2.0


Open Studio additional components

1. Download Open Studio from here. Scroll till the bottom of the page and download in the same folder the following files: -OpenStudio-3.2.0+e11f0a08b2-Windows.exe -OpenStudio-3.2.0+e11f0a08b2-Windows.tar.gz254

2. Unzip the .zip files.

3. Double click on the .exe file in order to run the installation.

Important to note: In the menu with the additional components to be installed along with Open Studio, leave all the boxes clicked.


Check for installation of new versions

If you restart your Rhino and Grasshopper and use the HB Check versions component, it should now show the new versions (Radiance 5.4a & Open Studio 3.2.0) installed.
