How to make a correct technical drawing

From TOI-Pedia

Technical drawings

Introduction

2D technical drawings are still the main method to communicate the design to partners in the design and build process. The use of 2D technical drawings is as old as architecture itself. Examples of floorplans exist which are 4000 years old. Scratched on clay shards or engraved in stone. The reason for the use of drawings is quite simple. One needs to communicate effectively the design intend to the people within the design team and of course the contractors. A set of drawing conventions are developed to make sure everybody will interpret the drawings in the same way. These drawing conventions are essential to know. In this online workshop we will look at the conventions and how to implement them in Rhino. The technique for generating a correct technical drawing is similar in other software programs. Knowing how to make a correct technical drawing in Rhino will allow you to apply the same techniques in, for example, Revit, AutoCad and Vectorworks.

Current Development

3dtech drawing rhino Rhino.jpg

For the last few years there is a strong move towards defining the design information into a single 3D model. This has some substantial advantages. It reduces mistakes due enhanced insight into the design and enhances communication. Even in this case, the 2D drawings are still the main communication means on the building site. These 2D files can be extracted from the 3D model. Although the industry moves towards the integral use of 3D data, tradition and lack of knowledge of the partners on how to use 3D data, hampers the industry wide implementation of 3D design data.

What you need to know to make a correct 2D technical drawing.

Line type

A line type defines how a line is drawn. This can be for example a continuous line or a combined dashed line with short and long dashes. The type of line will relate to what it represents. A dashed line for example can be used to draw hidden lines, thereby giving a representation of what lies behind an object or a combined dashed line for a grid (nl: Stramien)

line types

Line types are defined in the layer menu of Rhino. Go to the layer menu and select the line type tab. Select the correct line type. This line type will be applied to all the lines in that layer.

Please check the Technisch tekenen website for all the correct linetypes : http://wiki.bk.tudelft.nl/bk-wiki/Bouwtechnisch_Tekenen:_Tekentechnieken :

  • Getrokken lijn Deze lijn wordt gebruikt als:
    • zichtbare begrenzingslijn
    • arceringslijn
    • maatlijn en hulplijnen
    • roosterlijn
    • afbreeklijn

  • Streeplijn Deze lijn wordt gebruikt als:
    • niet-zichtbare begrenzingslijn
    • arceringslijn

    • hartlijn
    • stramienlijn
    • doorsnedelijn
    • afbreeklijn

Line thickness

line thickness

The use of different line thicknesses is essential for the readability of the drawing. Drawings with a single line thickness are a big ""NO NO"" in the industry. It makes the drawings difficult to read and leads to mistakes in interpretation of the drawing. Most of the times 3 line thicknesses are used.

The line thickness can be coupled to a layer. To change the thickness of the line go to Layer Menu » Print Width »  and adjust the thickness. The lines in that layer will change thickness.

Print Preview

The thickness of a line is normally not visible in Rhino. To make the thickness visible in the view port activate Viewport Menu » Print Preview »

Adding hatches to a 2D drawing

Rhino hatch.jpg
Rhino hatch1.jpg
Rhino hatch2.jpg

Hatches can be quite useful to define the properties of your geometry. A wall can have another hatch pattern then a floor for example. This technique is widely used in technical drawings where black and white printouts restrict you from using color.

In rhino we have a simple hatch option.

Before we start we have to make a new layer. Good practice is to place the hatch pattern on a separate layer so you can switch it on and off easily.

  • Select the Layers tab on the right menu.
  • Click twice on the name of the layer you want to convert to the hatch layer, and change its name into Hatch.
  • Or make a new layer by clicking on the left icon at the top of the menu.
  • Now double click the layer to make it active. Everything which is generated will be place on this layer.

To make a hatch pattern we go toDimensions » Hatch »

  • Select the option of Boundary yes or no.
  • If boundary is selected it will be possible to select overlapping regions within the selected curves
  • If boundary is not selected all inner area of the curves will be hatched.
  • Select the curves
  • Select the hatch pattern and adjust the pattern scale.

Measurements

The technical drawing will always be drawn at a 1 to 1 scale, meaning that 1mm in Rhino represents 1mm in reality. The measurements in the drawing should measure all the relevant elements the drawing. One should never measure the components of the printout by hand. The sizes of objects should be defined and described in the technical drawing. There are a range of measure ment options in Rhino. They differ in what is measured and the location of the measurement.

Please check the Technisch tekenen website for all the correct linetypes : http://wiki.bk.tudelft.nl/bk-wiki/Bouwtechnisch_Tekenen:_Tekentechnieken :

First make a layer for the dimensions. This is good practice, it will allow you to hide the dimensions when you are working on the drawing and define a correct line thickness for the dimensions.

Rhino annotationstyle.jpg

Secondly define the correct annotation(dimension) style.

  • Go to Dimensions » Annotation Styles »  and select Millimeter Architectural

Rhino distance.jpg

Finally select the correct measurement type and add the measurements to the drawing.

  • Go to Dimensions » Linear Dimension »  to define the measurement in the x or y direction to the measured object.
  • Go to Dimensions » Aligned Dimension »  to define the measurement parallel to the measured object.
  • Go to Dimensions » Rotated Dimension »  to define the measurement at an angle to the measured object.

Rhino Ordinatedistance.jpg

The Dimensions » Ordinate Dimension »  command differs from the previous ones because the measurement is taken from a base point, for example the edge of a wall, and then define how far it is from that point. Multiple measurements are therefore defining all the distance to a single point.

  • Go to Dimensions » Ordinate Dimension »  to define the multiple measurements from a single point.

Rhino radial dimensions.jpg

To measure angles, diameters and a radius.

  • Go to Dimensions » Radial Dimension »  to define the radius of an arc or circle.
  • Go to Dimensions » Diameter Dimension »  to define the diameter of an arc or circle. Note the diameter symbol
  • Go to Dimensions » Angle Dimension »  to define the angle between two lines.

Annotations

It is possible to add text to a drawing to clarify the drawing. Be sure that the text is not on top of other information Again place this on a separate layer.

Please check the Technisch tekenen website for all the correct use of annotations : http://wiki.bk.tudelft.nl/bk-wiki/Bouwtechnisch_Tekenen:_Tekentechnieken :

Rhino VERWIJZEN .jpg
  • Go to Dimensions » Leader »  and place the startpoint on the object the text reverses to. Then define the corner points of the line which will have the text at the end of the line.

Blocks

Rhinoblocks .jpg

A block is an object which can function as reference. That means that a block, representing curves or geometry, can be placed at several points in the drawing. The several placed blocks are linked to the original block. If the block is changed the other placed blocks will also change. This can be quite useful when similar objects are used in a drawing, like window or door frames. So a block is a mini drawing which you can copy in your scene. If the original block is changed the copies will also change.

To create a block:

RhinoFEFblocks .jpg
  • Go to Edit » Blocks » Creat Block Definition »  and select the object/s you want to turn into a block. The next thing you will have to define is the insertion point of the block. This is the point which you can use to snap to a wall for example. The menu opens and will ask you the name of the block and a description. Make sure you will use a correct name, because later on you have to select the blocks from a list of existing blocks. If you made a bunch of them, then a correct name can save you a lot of work.

Insert a block

Rhinoblocksinsert .jpg
  • Go to Edit » Blocks » Insert Block Instance »  and select the blocks name from the menu. You are asked if you want to be prompted when the block is inserted into your scene. This is for the move option useful because it allows you to place the block just by clicking with your mouse. If you have objects which are always on the same location you could use the option of defining the point of insertion. This can be useful for the drawing frame and block with information about the drawing.

Edit a block

Rhinoblocksedit1 .jpg
Rhinoblocksedit2 .jpg
  • Go to Edit » Blocks » Edit Block In Place »  and select the blocks name from the menu. You can add additional geometry to the block, move the insertion point or delete parts. The instances of the block will automatically be updated.
