Mental Ray Diffuse Bounces in older versions

From TOI-Pedia

When using Maya 8.5 or 2008, you need to go into the 'miDefaultOptions' node to increase the limit of FG Diffuse bounces.

The number of Secondary Diffuse Bounces is directly accessible from the Render Settings in Maya 2009 (and later).

Type miD* in the quick selection box, or select miDefaultOptions on the MEL commandline.

Select miDefaultOptions.jpg

Then press ctrl + a to open the attribute editor.

MiDefaultOptions FG Diffuse.jpg

Open the Final Gather section and set FG Diffuse Bounces to a value of 10 (or so). It will be automatically limited by the maximum number of reflections you allow and/or the maximum trace depth. So you can set this value quite high without worrying rendertimes will 'explode' immediately and it avoids having to go back to increase the value again even further.
