Revit Modeling: Openings

From TOI-Pedia

There are various ways to model openings in your Revit model. Each method has it's own features, benefits and limitations. A main distinction is whether this opening is filled, for example with a door, window or (yes indeed) another wall, or whether it's a void. This page lists the main option to create openings in your Revit model.

Openings (voids)

These tools are found in the Openings panel on the Home tab of the Ribbon.

Wall

Cut a rectangular opening in a wall.

Vertical

Cut a rectangular opening in a floor, roof or ceiling

Shaft

Cuts an rectangular opening through floors, roofs and ceilings, spanning multiple levels.

By Face

Cut an opening that is perpendicular to the roof, ceiling or floor.

Dormer

Cut a roof to create a dormer

Windows and Doors

Windows and Doors are components that can be placed in host components, typically Walls. Some Windows can also be placed in Roofs. They 'cut' an opening in the wall or roof, which is filled with a frame and glass or a door.

Consider using a Curtain Wall as an alternative to using windows. When you're tempted to place windows directly adjacent to each other, using a Curtain Wall is usually the better alternative. See the section Using a Curtain wall as an opening.

Creating a Door in a Curtain Wall

Examples of Curtain Wall System Panel Doors

You can't use the normal Door tool in Revit to create a door in a Curtain Wall. Revit Door families can only be hosted in 'normal' walls.

To create a Door in a Curtain Wall, you change one of the panels in the Curtain Wall to a System Panel Family that represents a door, such as the M_Curtain Wall Sgl Glass Family, available in the Revit Content Libraries.

Note that the door will always be the size of the entire panel. If that is too big, you need to change the layout of your Curtain Grid to create a smaller panel.

Using a Curtain wall as an opening

Curtain Walls are a special kind of wall, because to an architect, they function more as an opening, but to Revit they are walls (just mainly made from glass or other panels and with a farming system: the mullions).

Use the Cut Geometry tool to have the curtain wall cut a hole in another wall. Initially you model the opening as an extra piece of wall running parallel, in the same position as the larger wall. By using the Cut Geometry tool, this wall will cut an opening into the other wall. By changing it's type to a curtain wall, you can create a Mullion framing filled with (glass) panels.
