Maya assigns lambert1 to each new object. With Mental Ray you can get strange unpredictable results when lambert1 is still assigned to the geometry you're rendering. Therefore it is best to replace all lambert1 materials with another material. It can be a material with the same color as lambert1. You don't need to delete lambert1 (please don't), but please make sure it's not assigned to any geometry you're rendering.

An easy way to replace all lambert1 materials at once using the Hypershade:

Make a new lambert material. Use the right mouse button on the lambert 1 > Select objects in initial shading groups Right mouse button on the new lambert > Asign material to selection
