Voorbereiding

Steps to create a residential building

In this tutorial we will show how to create a residential building section from a mass for BK4ON4.

It is also possible to create the residential building without the help of a Mass. Just create the building with walls, floors and roof. Use the different views, levels and grid lines to place your building elements.

Create an in place mass

Create rectangle
Rectangle has same width as existing building (3D view)
Select top surface Solid Form
Create Solid Form
Put top face on 06 Level

Create a mass in the Revit project with the same length and width as the existing building. Go to 00 level and use the grid lines in the model.

  • Open the 'Massing & Site' tab in the Ribbon.
  • In the 'Conceptual Mass' panel, click Revit In-place mass button.png (In-Place Mass). This will create a custom mass object in which you build the mass itself.

Revit may pop-up a message about changing the view settings for massing purposes. Dismiss this message.

  • Enter any name you want in the pop up.

You will now go into editing mode.

  • In the Draw panel in the Ribbon, click Revit 2011 Rectangle.png (Rectangle)
  • Draw a rectangle on your screen (00 Level) with the same length as and width the existing building.
  • In the Ribbon, click Revit 2011 Modify.png (Modify) to end the command or press the Escape key.

This is your base or profile. The next step is to extrude a profile from the base/profile. More exotic shapes can be made by using multiple profiles, see Toipedia BK4ON4 & BK4MA2

  • Select your rectangle shape
  • Click the lower part of the Revit Create form button.png (Create Form) button, then Revit Solid form button.png (Solid Form).

The profile is now extruded into a surface. You can adjust the amount by which you extrude the profile by moving the X,Y,Z handle up or down. The X,Y,Z handles are green, blue and red respectively.

  • Select the top face of the Solid Form.
  • Go to the East elevation in your project browser.
  • Put the top face on the sixth level (06 Level) with the blue Y-handle.
  • Click Revit Finish mass button.png (Finish Mass)

To create dimensions in your elevation views use Aligned Dimension.

  • Go to an elevation in your project browser.
  • In the Ribbon, Modify tab, click Revit 2011 Aligned Dimension.png (Aligned Dimension).
  • Set the dimensions between levels or grid lines.

Modify mass (Extrusion 1)

Put top face on 06 Level
Put bottom face on -01 Level
Add extrusion -4000 mm

Next we'll add extrusion to the mass. This will be the basement of the building.

  • Select the Mass you've created
  • In the Modify Mass tab, click Revit Edit In-place button.png (Edit In-Place)
  • Select the bottom face of the mass. Use Tab to cycle through the elements if you can't select the face.
  • Click the lower part of the Revit Create form button.png (Create Form) button, then Revit Solid form button.png (Solid Form).
  • (Click the lock icon of the new extrusion. Now you are free to change the shape in any direction)
  • Change the depth to 4000 mm or put the bottom face on -01 Level with the blue Y-handle. Same as the top face.

Modify mass (Extrusion 2)

Select side face
Add extrusion in direction of the existing building
Finished Mass

Next we'll add a second extrusion to the mass. This could be a underground parking garage.

  • Select the side face of the mass opposite to the existing building.
  • Change the extrusion length to 9000 mm.
  • Click Revit Finish mass button.png (Finish Mass)

Using the Mass to create floors, walls and roofs

Select levels mass floors
Create mass floors
Choose floor type: Vloer ON4
Create floors

In this section we'll use the mass to create floors, walls and roofs.

Step 1:

  • Select the Mass.
  • On the Modify|Mass tab, in the Model panel, Click Mass floors.
  • Select the Levels where to place floors. Now thin floor levels are created. Note that in the properties the gross floor area has been given.

Step 2:

  • On the Massing & Site tab, in the Model by Face panel, Click Floor.
  • Select multiple Mass Floor levels with LMB (Left mouse button).
  • In the Properties choose the floor named: Vloer ON4. Default is set on Floor generic (150mm).
  • On the Modify|Place Floor by Face tab, Multiple Selection panel, Click Create Floors. Now the floors will be created.

Using the Mass (Faces) to create Walls

Create walls
Choose Wall family: Wand Opbouw ON4

In this section we'll use the faces of the Mass to create walls. We will create different type

  • Select your mass.
  • On the Massing&Site tab, in the Model by Face panel, click Revit Wall by face button.png (Wall by Face).
  • In the Properties Palette you can change the type of wall that will be created by selecting the desired Wall Family from the pull-down.
  • Choose the Wand Opbouw ON4 wall family.
  • Select the face of the Mass. A wall on this face is created.
  • Select additional faces to create walls.
  • Click Modify or press Esc to finish.
Note that the wall you've created will not change automatically when you change the shape of your Mass after you've created the Walls by Face. You need to select the Wall(s) and click Revit Update to face button.png (Update to Face) in the Ribbon.
Instead of a normal wall, you can also create a Curtain Wall on a face. Use the Revit Curtain system by face button.png (Curtain System by Face) for this purpose. Refer to Revit Modeling: Basic Elements for information on how to modify this Curtain System and create Mullions.

Using the Mass (Faces) to create Roofs

Create roofs
Set Level Offset top roof at 400 mm
  • Select your mass.
  • On the Massing&Site tab, in the Model by Face panel, click Revit Roof by face button.png (Roof by Face).
  • Select the two roof faces with LMB (Left mouse button).
  • In the Properties choose the roof named: Dak. Default is set on Basic Roof generic (400mm).
  • On the Modify|Place Roof by Face tab, Multiple Selection panel, Click Create Roof.
  • Click Modify or press Esc to finish.

Modify Roof offset

  • Select the Roof on 06 level.
  • Go to properties and set the Level Offset on 400 mm. Now your top roof will sit on the existing walls.

Modify wall constraints

Modify wall constraints
Change Base Constraint to 00 Level
Change Top Constraint up to 06 Level

Wall constraints, including the Top Constraint together with Base Constraint, control whether the wall is drawn from a specified level upwards or downwards, the height of the wall, and whether its height will change when its base constraint or top constraint moves.

When you create a wall in a plan view, the Base Constraint is the level associated with the view. When you create a wall in a 3D view, use Level on the Options Bar to specify the level to use for the wall's Base Constraint value.

Modify constraints:

  • When you Using the Mass (Faces) to create Walls no Top or Base constraints are created.
  • Select the 4 upper walls and set the Base constraint on 00 Level.
  • Set the Top constraint up to level: 06 Level.
  • The walls are now connected to the existing levels.

Do the same for the walls at the lower levels:

  • Select the 6 lower walls and set the Base constraint on -01 Level.
  • Set the Top constraint up to level: 00 Level.

Change visibility Mass

View tab - Visibility/Graphics button
Deselect Mass
Show mass by view settings

To change the visibility of the model go to the View tab and Click Visibility/Graphics. Here you can change the visibility settings to hide or show hidden mass objects. Keyboard shortcut is: VV.

  • Go to the Model Categories tab in the Visibility/Graphics Window.
  • Go to Mass and deselect mass to hide mass objects. Now mass objects will be hidden in the 3D view. Only the Floors, Walls and Roofs will be visible.
The option 'Show mass by view settings' has to be selected. Go to Massing & Site tab, Conceptual Mass panel, Show mass by view settings.

Deselect Mass

Modify Floors

Select floor in 3D view
Go to the Level with the selected floor
Move the boundary lines to the inside of the walls

In this part, you will modify the floor profiles. This is because the top floors intersect with the walls.

Edit the profile of the floor:

  • Open the 3D view.
  • Select a floor and go to the corresponding Floor plan (Level).
  • In the Ribbon, Modify | Floors contextual tab, click Revit 2011 Edit Boundary Tool.png (Edit Boundary).
  • Move the boundary lines to the inside of the wall.
  • In the Ribbon, click Revit 2011 Finish.png (Finish Edit Mode).
